ABOUT SUNLESS (UV-FREE) TANNING
How
do sunless tanning products work?
The main active ingredient in sunless tanning products is Dihydroxyacetone (DHA). DHA is a colorless sugar that interacts with amino acids in the outer layers of skin to produce a natural golden brown “tan” color.
Many sunless products contain an immediate bronzer. The color of the bronzer determines the initial color of your sunless tan but this initial color washes off in your first post-tanning shower, to reveal your DHA "tan". If your immediate sunless color is not optimal, the bronzer is probably to blame. Bora Lea Skin Therapy uses a tanning formula WITHOUT BRONZER. This means that the formula is clear and colorless so there is nothing to wash off or to stain your clothes.
How long will my sunless tan last?
Depending upon your activity level and skin type, a professional spray tan lasts approximately 5-7 days and fades naturally, just like a tan from the sun. Prolonged showers and scrubs will make your tan fade more quickly. Moisturizing twice daily will extend the length of your airbrush tan. With continued follow up applications, you can maintain your sunless tan indefinitely.
What can I do to care for my sunless tan?
Avoid getting in the water or vigorous activities that cause you to perspire, until after your first post-tanning shower. Once your tan has developed, it becomes part of your skin and, just as with a regular suntan, activities that exfoliate the skin will slowly fade your color. Keep your skin well hydrated with alcohol-free moisturizer. Avoid the drying effects of prolonged exposure to sun, wind and chlorine. Use a gentle cleanser and do not scrub your skin. Pat dry instead of rubbing, and moisturize immediately after bathing. These simple measures will help maximize the look and length of your tan.
How should I prepare for my sunless tanning session?
You should exfoliate using an oil-free scrub or shower mitt. Do not use moisturizing body washes, lotions or body oils prior to your session, except on very dry areas, such as elbows and heels, as they leave a residue on your skin that will prevent proper development of your tan. For the same reason, makeup and deodorants should also be removed prior to tanning. Prior to your session we will provide our own hydrating blend for elbows, knees, hands, feet and any other extremely dry areas to prohibit excessive darkening in these areas.
How long will the airbrush application take?
A typical full-body session takes about twenty minutes. Partial body services take proportionately less time. Please plan for a little additional time at your first visit to allow for preparation and to become accustomed to the airbrush method.
What should I wear to my session?
We suggest wearing dark-colored, loose clothing and flip-flops. Tight clothing, denim, and exposed elastic have a sloughing effect on the skin and should be avoided immediately after your tan as they may rub off your tan. The solution goes on clear but may develop a brownish tint on white fabrics after several hours, therefore, if you choose to be tanned in a bathing suit, we recommend it be in a dark color as solution will inevitably get on your suit.
Will I have tan lines?
It depends on what you wear during tanning. We recommend that clients wear an old, dark swimsuit, or, small underwear. We carry disposable thongs, available upon request. Please note that these are designed to leave minimal tan lines, so they're very scant. Clients over the age of 18 may choose to tan topless or in the nude. All clients under 18 years of age must have a signed parental approval form and must tan in a full swimsuit. Be assured that your tanning technician is professional and will make every effort to accommodate your needs whatever you choose to wear.
Can I use tanning beds or tan outdoors after sunless tanning?
Yes, but It is important to note that sunless tanning offers no protection from ultraviolet light. While you will appear to be tan, a broad-spectrum sunscreen is still necessary to prevent burning and other skin damage from UV exposure. Additionally, drying your skin in the sun or by UV tanning beds can reduce the longevity of your sunless tan.
Can I tan if I'm pregnant or nursing?
We've tanned many happy clients throughout their pregnancies - with their obstetrician's approval. It is generally accepted, that properly applied sunless solution is safe for those who are nursing or pregnant as the DHA penetrated only the outermost layers of the skin and is non-toxic, however, but he final decision about whether sunless tanning is appropriate g your pregnancy should be made by you and your physician.
Why is airbrush tanning better than misting-booths?
The airbrush, with its’ precision and flexibility, is the application method of choice. It allows for a smooth, even, flawless application. Unlike misting-booths, the esthetician who applies your airbrush tan will take special care to avoid over application, around the hairline, knees, elbows, and heels, where dry skin tends to absorb more color. Mist-on booths are pre-set to a timer and volume of spray that does not adjust for the individual and often results in a streaky tan.
